If you’re a user of the social media platform called Facebook (or whatever new name they’ve bequeathed themselves) then you may be aware of a feature called “Memories.” If you’re not on Facebook, the Memories feature goes back through the years for that day and reminds you of things you had previously posted. So for example, it might show you things that you had posted on November 29th in 2012, 2015, 2017, and 2020. I used to find it a little annoying, but over the years I’ve come to like it. Hidden wisdoms that I had shared from other pages pop back up as well as happy memories (like past trips to Disney World.)
On November 16th, a memory of something I had posted back in 2015 came up. It was a quote from the Facebook page of Abraham-Hicks. Here’s the quote:
“Make up your mind that nothing is more important than how I feel now, because now is everything. Now is the whole enchilada. Now is the power of me.
Now, now, now, now, now… You might as well start somewhere and it might as well be now. Why not start improving your life now, now, now?”
I’ll be honest that I don’t remember posting that 6 years ago. Reading it felt like reading it for the first time. But the realization that came to me was that I clearly didn’t learn that lesson in 2015 or the years that followed. In reading that astute message from Abraham-Hicks, I woke up to the fact that I am always living life for the future. Nearly everything I do is so that I can be happy later – so that I can have fun in the future.
Frankly, I think the entire world’s focus right now is the future. All we want is for things to return to normal. For pandemic to be over. To have a planet-wide mask burning ceremony. That’s not how things are right now. Things still aren’t normal. And so I think most are not living in the now. We’re living for the future.
It’s the very heart of the holiday season. Even my (ever so slightly) bah humbug husband can’t deny that. I’ve set Spotify to holiday music and changed the password so Lee can’t switch it back to something else. The gifts are wrapped and my attention has turned to my favorite two days of the year; the 24th and the 25th.
I like to call this time of year “the Season of Light” as a way to sort of round up all the traditions since nearly every holiday celebration focuses on lights (candles or otherwise.) I always try to make December quiet. It’s my time to reflect. My time to just “be.” We celebrate Christmas in this house and I love every last thing about it.
But to circle back to Abraham-Hicks’ advice. If ever there is a time of the year when I’m in the moment, it’s December. If ever I am tuned in to “now now now” it’s that month. The closest I come to living in the now is always the last month of the year. I still don’t do a fabulous job at it, but I do better than any other time of the year.
So what if I gave myself a gift this year of “now now now?” What if I used December as a springboard to change my ways for 2022?
What if I just didn’t stop my focus on being in the now just because January 1st rolled around? What if I upped my game in January instead of dumbing it down…
Can you relate to this? Can you feel the message here?
Yeah. That’s just how I roll this time of year.
Happy Holidays!
