This week when I sat down to write my message to you, I asked the angels what I should talk about. Immediately, my 10 year old boy, Jace came to me with the message “Write about me, dad.”
At first I was surprised, but then I thought “Oh. Right.”
For those of you who do not know, Lee and I have two “kids.” One is our 6 year old rescue Sheltie named Riley. She’s a sable colored beauty-queen who is as sweet as the honey tones of her fur. The other is our 10 year old rescue boy, Jace. He’s sleek and elegant and handsome. A total love bug but also a goofball.
He’s also going deaf.
This is very ironic. It was Lee’s and my attempt to rescue an already deaf dog 8 years ago (we got there too late) that led us to Jace. So the fact that he’s now nearly deaf is not a “coincidence” that is lost on us.
Jace and Riley are our children. For many reading that statement, this concept will resonate. For others, it might not. But to us, they are beloved soulmates who we made a lifetime commitment to when we rescued them. Their love has subsequently rescued us many times over.
I have not spoken about Jace’s condition because…
we – as a family – we are still adjusting to this new reality. Our love for Jace is great and we have had to fight back the “story” that his life will be less or that he’s scared or upset. In fact, he probably is a little scared. At the very least, he’s unsettled by the change.
That being said, my most amazing energy healer is always telling me that there’s a difference between the stories we tell ourselves and the facts. So here are the facts:
~ It could be so much worse. Deaf is totally workable. He could be ill or dying or feeling terrible. But he’s not. He’s happy. Vibrant. Robust. He just can’t hear.
~ We as a family will adjust. Riley is convinced that the moon is in the sky because her big brother put it there. She is totally picking up the pace to help him. She alerts Jace when something is up. She shows him that action needs to be taken. She’s got this.
~ He has the best care any soul could hope for.
~ For whatever reason, this is his Divine path. And therefore, it is Riley’s, Lee’s, and my path, too.
This has been going on for a while. It has taken Lee and I time to go from panic and near heartbreak to instead focus on the above facts. However, we are no longer scared. We no longer worry about the loss of hearing, but instead we are focusing on his outstanding health and continued playfulness and exuberance. Guiding us along the way is Pat Blocker, author of the soon to be published “Letting In the Dog.” (more on her next week.) Her calm in the face of what has had us panicked has been a source of immense comfort. She is teaching us how to work with this change by learning to focus on images in our minds sent to Jace and sign language more than words.
The main point here is this…when scary things happen, the great challenge is not to get caught up in the fear and worry. This just emphasizes – via law of attraction – bringing in more of what we do not want. I’m not saying that it’s easy to instead focus on the positive. Sometimes it’s a huge challenge.
But it’s also a necessity. We could focus all kinds of fearful energy on Jace. But he doesn’t need that. It’s not helpful. It’s also not helpful for Riley or Lee or me. I believe this was Jace’s reminder to me this morning when he sent me the message to “Talk about me, Dad.”
Remember. It’s not the “story,” it’s the facts.
And the fact is, the Universe loves you. And it has your back.
Doggie blessings,
~Radleigh
